Who am I:
Growing up in Sri Lanka, near the approach to Colombo airport and seeing aircraft flying over the ocean triggered my passion for aviation. From a young age, I knew I wanted to become a pilot and dreamt about flying the vast oceans. My interest remained and I gained my private pilot’s licence in 2015. I was determined to influence the industry to ensure a more diverse workforce.
Using my experience in education as a headteacher and a lecturer and combining my aviation passion I set up The Aviatrix Project<http://www.theaviatrixproject.com/> in 2015.
As a Community Interest Company it is entirely self-funded and encourages women and girls and those from disadvantaged backgrounds to consider a career in aviation. It is so important to ensure that there are strong role models from all walks of life – this can be life changing. We need to ensure that we use our skills within STEM to challenge stereotypes and support schools and families to change perceptions.
We’re at a crossroads and I can see things changing from what they’ve been, but it takes passionate people with the right mindset to do this. As a BAME STEM Ambassador, I feel a great sense of responsibility to ensure that I continue to be a role model for the next generation.
What I do:
I am currently working as a STEM Engagement Coordinator for a charity based in the East of England. My role involves working across a number of regions building new contacts and sustaining valuable stakeholder relationships with companies, universities and schools/colleges in the region.
My main aims are to promote the STEM Ambassador programme in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Luton, Peterborough and Cambridgeshire and to engage companies and organisations across the East of England and Greater London to provide Nuffield Research Placements for students.
I am also actively involved in delivering educational outreach activities and offering bespoke training sessions for educators and businesses.
Why you should follow me on Linkedin:
My work for The Aviatrix Project makes such a difference to the young people I work with. All too often my followers are keen to support initiatives and make a difference to young people. I’d love to increase this base so that I have a wider audience of people who can help me make that change.
Who I follow on Linkedin:
I follow a number of passionate and inspiring people from the world of education, aviation and aerospace.
