Who am I:

A seasoned Communications Director, I help companies and individuals in the aviation, aerospace and defence sectors tell their stories better as well as providing strategic advice to a range of aviation organisations. I’m also a very keen Private Pilot with a particular passion for vintage taildraggers and fast jets.

I co-own a 1950 de Havilland Chipmunk, which we keep at Old Warden aerodrome, home of the famous Shuttleworth Collection. I feel extremely privileged in that my passion for aviation has allowed me to forge a fascinating career and I’m regularly asked to advise other organisations such as the Civil Aviation Authority, Royal Aeronautical Society, Honourable Company of Air Pilots, Historic Aircraft Association and the Flying Legends Airshow.

One of my recent highlights was working with the Aircraft Restoration Company in promoting their NHS Spitfire initiative during the Covid-19 pandemic.

What I do:

My day-to-day role involves media relations, government relations, internal communications, investor relations and social and digital media. I also keep my hand in as a writer, contributing to a range of publications on all aspects of aviation but particularly ‘hands-on’ flight tests of various aeroplanes.

For a keen amateur, I’ve somehow managed to rack up more than 25 different types in my logbook! I also provide strategic communications advice to aviation organisations and training on how to make the most of media interviews.

Why you should follow me on Linkedin:

I’ve just been named as ‘Aerospace Communicator of the Year’ in the 2021 Aerospace Media Awards. The nominations are submitted and a winner chosen by journalists from across our industry. It was a great honour and very flattering to be chosen from such a rich crop of experienced communications people! I have a handle on most aspects of our industry thanks to my extensive network and the support I provide to various organisations.

I’m particularly keen on promoting more diversity across the sector and showcasing the impact that aviation can have on lives and people’s future prospects. The issues of decarbonisation and wider environmental impacts is also a hot topic for me – as a sector that has continuously innovated throughout its history, aviation is very well placed to develop technologies that will make a real difference to the future of our planet.

Who I follow on Linkedin

I follow business executives, journalists and thought leaders from across my industry and others. I’m currently looking for insights and trends as aviation and aerospace responds to both the Covid pandemic but also the rush towards Net Zero. I also enjoy seeing how others in similar roles to me promote the work of their businesses online. LinkedIn has become increasingly powerful in the past few years and for me has eclipsed all other social media platforms in terms of usefulness.

“I absolutely love the annual Royal International Air Tattoo, held at RAF Fairford and a must-attend for the global aviation industry. I was privileged to be working as the the UK Head of Communications for Airbus in 2018 when the RAF celebrated its centenary at the event. The following year I was transitioning into my current role, which was a great excuse to pair up 2Excel and Airbus for some PR activity! The atmosphere at RIAT is fantastic with people from across the industry conducting business and networking alongside the world’s biggest military airshow.” – Ben
