Who am I:

I am an astrobiologist, an educator, and a communicator of science. With an education spanning programs in chemistry, biology, astrophysics, and geology, I’ve taken part in research projects involving marine molecular biology, aerobiology, Mars analog research, and research on sulfur cycling in polar environments related to our explorations of the Solar System.

I believe that science literacy and public involvement in scientific progress is absolutely necessary for an informed citizenry to build a sustainable and healthy future for all of us. I’m also a meditation instructor, and I truly believe that meditation is something we should teach children to help them explore their inner world while also learning about science and our explorations of the outer world.

What I do:

I’ve conducted research in the Canadian High Arctic, have done x-ray spectroscopy at three different particle accelerators around the world, and I am the Host of the NASA-funded livestream show called “Ask an Astrobiologist”. I currently serve as the Director of Communications and Marketing for the non-profit Blue Marble Space, I’m a Research Scientist with the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, and I’m also the Director of Logistics for the University Rover Challenge (an undergraduate robotics competition focused on Mars rovers).

I’ve given public talks to classrooms and student groups from around the world and have been interviewed on various podcasts. I’m also known for being a professional orator and from time-to-time I have done coaching for public speaking and career development.

Why you should follow me on Linkedin:

I know that one of my purposes in this life is to be a connector — to bring other people together and help them develop their communities within their own interests.

Who I follow on Linkedin

I follow people like Peter Diamandis and Tim Ferris because they inspire me to think like an entrepreneur. I follow Sal Khan and LeVar Burton because they have done such wonderful good in the world. In my opinion, you should use social media as a place where your voice can be heard and where you can help to amplify the voices of others who are doing good in the world or who need to be heard.

While I do most of my writing on my personal website ( or in other places, I do sometimes share my thoughts and writing on LinkedIn. I like this post because I’m a child of the ’80s and because I truly believe we need to be excellent both to each other and for each other..
